The residents of today's long-term care facilities are different than those of a decade ago, presenting additional challenges to certified nursing assistants, the front-line workers in nursing homes. Not only are the residents older, but they have increased chronic diseases and require more care and medications. Nurse aide training programs need to keep pace with the changing health care requirements of long-term care residents. CNA courses must stress the importance of additional training on topics such as mental disorders, proper catheter care, feeding techniques, hydration, and infusion therapies. To meet the demands of today's clients, nurse aide programs have mandatory classroom instruction to address issues of communication, teamwork, and stress reduction. Federal legislation requires that each state should approve nurse aide training programs that have a minimum of seventy-five hours of instruction. More than twenty-five states have decided to go beyond the federal requirements and thus require extra hours to be added to the existing CNA curriculum.
