How can the state of Texas improve nurse aide training programs to ensure that nurse aides are ready to work once they pass the competency exam? One of the suggestions being reviewed and currently considered is to increase the number of hours dedicated to clinical training and skills practice in state approved nurse aide programs. In addition, the hands-on training may take place earlier in the program instead of being left towards the end of the course. Laboratory instruction and practice needs to be realistic and mimic actual scenarios encountered in a nursing home facility. Overall, clinical practice needs to include all the skills a nurse aide encounters on the job. Ideally, instructors will focus on providing individualized, constructive feedback and identifying weaknesses for nurse aide each student.
