Certified nursing assistants represent seventy percent of the total nursing staff in long-term care facilities, and are responsible for ninety percent of the direct client care. Nurse aides provide the bulk of the patient's care, and their main function is to assist the patient, not the nurses. Achieving a stable CNA workforce in Texas has become a state priority since the quality of nursing home residents depends on the availability of well prepared nursing assistants. CNA program coordinators are considering the process of screening applicants prior to enrolling students in a nurse aide training program. Part of the screening would include identifying those who need remedial and English as a second language courses. Addressing such needs could greatly improve the success of these individuals to complete a CNA course and pass the nurse aide state certification.
