Are the seventy-five minimum hours of CNA training required by federal law sufficient to prepare Texas nurse aide graduates for their jobs? Several studies suggest there is a need to increase the minimum federal requirement for CNA programs to at least one hundred hours, which will ensure that nurse aides receive optimal training before providing care to residents. Clinical training is an essential component of any nurse aide course. According to CNA program directors, instructors, and students, the clinical part of any nurse aide program should be increased to at least sixty hours. The overall effect of increased training requirements will result in a better quality of resident care. Furthermore, the decreased CNA turnover rate will minimize the nurse aide training program costs in long-term care facilities.
