Bachelor's Degree Nursing Programs
Bachelor of Science nursing degrees typically take four years to complete. This type of program is offered mostly by universities, it is longer in duration and more expensive to complete than an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program.
BSN programs prepare professional nurses and focus not only on basic nursing knowledge and skills but on building critical thinking and leadership qualities. Coursework needed to complete a BSN program ranges from science classes (anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biology) to humanistic and general education courses (English, history, communication, management). Graduates of accredited BSN programs are eligible to obtain their practicing license after passing the NCLEX-RN exam. The professional title a nurse will hold after completing a BSN program and obtaining licensure is RN, BSN.

Did you know that in order to become a registered nurse (RN), you must first complete a program of study which qualifies you to take the NCLEX-RN state board licensing examination? Programs of study include associate degree programs (two years of college) or generic baccalaureate programs (at least four years of college). Graduates of both programs take the same licensing exam - the NCLEX-RN examination. Angelo State University offers an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree (AASN) as the first step toward becoming a registered nurse (RN). Graduates of this program take the Texas licensing examination to become registered nurses.
NCLEX pass rates for graduates of this nursing program have exceeded state and national rates for the last five years in a row. During your first year at Angelo State University, you will only be allowed to take academic courses after which you can apply to the nursing program. Once accepted, you will begin the AASN nursing course sequence in the fall of your second year. Upon graduation from the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree program, you are eligible to take the licensing exam to become a registered nurse however, graduates can go on and complete their BSN. You can choose to work and go to school part time and complete the BSN with an additional two years of study. If you choose to continue as a full time student you might be able to complete the BSN degree program in a year.
